Women’s Equality Day is celebrated every year on August 26th in the US. It is the day we commemorate the adoption of the 19th Amendment into the Constitution, which ensures the right to vote for everyone regardless of gender. Since 1920, this day has been one to celebrate because it is the day women were given a voice in this country. And today it is a chance for us to learn and honor the people who came before us, fighting for change. Fighting for justice. Fighting for equality.
We know this could be a day that just comes and goes, but we want to do our part to help it matter more than National Guacamole Day. Here are some ways you and your friends can celebrate Women’s Equality Day.
There are loads of amazing resources out there teaching about key players and key events throughout women's history. Give it a quick goog' and check it out. Or take a look at a few of our favorites - Smithsonian Initiative, National Women's History Museum online exhibits, The Equalizer podcast, Penguin Random House book list, and honestly the entire Lemonade album by Beyonce.
Pushing for equality involves a lot of action. And we all know that action needs money. If you follow any orgs that you love, think about giving to them today. Not sure where to give? We found an awesome list of organizations here for you to learn about.
Pick up the phone and call a gal pal that has helped to shape and encourage you. Post a photo of you with your besties using the hashtag for Women's Equality Day. High five the ladies you see out and about throughout the day. Fighting for equality takes us all!
Have a girls' movie night! Pop the popcorn, pour the wine, and curl up with some of the all time best female led movies. This list on IMDb is a pretty good catchall if you need some inspo. A couple personal favorites are 9 to 5 and Charlie's Angels.
We've said it before and we'll say it again. Watch. Women's. Sports. That's it. That's the tweet. Stay on top of things with the help of our friends at Just Women's Sports.
