NWSL playoffs are set!
It's the most wonderful time of year: NWSL playoffs are here! To get you up to speed, we put together a rundown of the incredible teams competing.
Portland Thorns
The Portland Thorns secured their No. 1 spot early-on in a 0-0 draw against North Carolina Courage, earning a quarterfinal bye and the ability to host their semifinal game. Portland closed out their regular season in first place with a record of 13-6-5, and 44 points. Portland made an appearance in each of the last three postseasons, and won the championship in 2017.
OL Reign
OL Reign also locked up their spot early, also getting a quarterfinal bye as the No. 2 seed as well as the opportunity to host their semifinal match. OL Reign finished the regular season 13-8-3 and 42 points, beating the Kansas City Current for their thirteenth season win. They have reached the postseason playoffs a total of four times, most recently during the 2019 season.
Washington Spirit
The Washington Spirit earned the No. 3 spot in a 1-0 win over the Houston Dash, winning their first playoff berth since 2016. The Spirit are unbeaten in their last six games, and secured home field advantage (secured the ability to host) in the quarterfinals. They closed their regular season with a record of 11-7-6 and 39 total points.
Chicago Red Stars
The Chicago Red Stars clinched their spot and home-field advantage with a 1-0 win over the Orlando Pride this past Friday night. They finished the season with a record of 11-8-5 and 38 points. Chicago will attempt to advance to its second championship game after losing in 2019 to the Courage.
Gotham FC
Gotham FC earned one of the two final spots in the playoffs this past Sunday as the No. 5 seed, and is playoff-bound for the first time since 2013. They finished the season 8-5-11, and 35 points.
North Carolina Courage
The North Carolina Courage earned the second of the final two spots this past Sunday. North Carolina’s end of the season record is 9-9-6 and 33 points. North Carolina has appeared in each of the last three postseasons, earning the championship title in 2018 and 2019.
